STUDYING WITHOUT MUCH ADO
Students often feel pressured
studying, especially close to examination period. It gets weary sometimes when
one has to flip through volumes of pages or go through sleepless nights only to
get to the examination hall and find out only a small portion of what you have
read was asked or that the only part you failed to read came out glaring at you
in the face as a compulsory question, disappointment is the feeling!
On some occasions, you read and it
all drifts away or your brain does not seem to comprehend the voluminous notes
or text before you. The anxiety and fright increases as examination approaches,
bringing with it diverse wishes, one that yearns for a postponement on one hand
and one that just want it to be done away with on the other hand come what may.
In the middle of all these you then take
a look at some you term genius for always getting the good grades no matter
what and you wonder if you were being taught by the same teachers in the same
learning environment, open to the same resources and you just wish you could
switch places.
Not minding the above, the most important
thing to note is that being a genius or being brilliant is not a day’s job.
Though IQ differs and we are all differently endowed, but the fact still remains
that each and every student can improve on whatever original ability he or she
is endowed with.
Take a look for example at the so
called genius, they hardly miss class, are very attentive, carry out
assignments diligently etc. Thus if one can imbibe some of these qualities,
there would definitely be improvements.
To start this, be determined to read
and pass, have that conviction that once you understand what is being taught,
you read and digest, you will scale through successfully. Do not have a number
limit to times you have to study before exams, read over and over again as many
times as possible till you get used to it like memory verse.
Thereafter, imbibe the culture of
read as you learn. Start studying from the beginning of the semester, term or
session. Once a new topic is taught make sure you read and comprehend in your
own terms. Do not allow a new topic to be taught before you go over the former
one, backlogs of topics discourage readers.
Furthermore, as new topics are being
taught, read on in addition to what you have on ground before, then revise all
together. This piecemeal method makes learning easier and less stressful. It is
also advisable to jot down cogent points subhead by subhead to such extent that
you can deal directly with the jottings without reference to the main text.
It is trite to note that if you are
studying not only to pass but to pass “excellently”, it is pertinent to make
research on the topics, doing this piecemeal often helps because it is not that
easy to have the spare time and energy for such when exams are near.
To cope with the stress and pressure,
do the right thing at the right time. For example, if there is anything you
need to do at a point in time, do not leave it to study because if you are the
worrying type your mind would definitely be there and this would pose a
distraction. It might be chores, personal or family issues that need attention
or even a movie or party you don’t want to miss (note that not it is not a must
to attend all outings, so make priorities for yourself).
I have in fact learnt that when you do
the needful first, the guilt that you left your study make you yearn more for
your books such that when you finally settle to study, you read and retain more
and at a fast pace.
Lastly, keep good company, make
friends that are brighter than you are so you can gain from them educationally.
Also have a study group where you discuss, treat past questions and brainstorm
about possible questions and answers or in the alternative attend tutorials.
When all this is done, you have done
your best then you leave the rest to the Supreme being you believe in with
faith. Believe you me you will not only study without much ado but will also
come out successfully in flying colours.
